If you’re not preselling, you’re losing money

PresellingThe number one strategy to increase your affiliate sales is preselling.

Before we start, let’s talk about what preselling actually is. Preselling is both an art and a science. And it’s function is to prepare your reader to buy something. Then you send them to the site that sells what you’ve prepared them for. When done correctly, your reader will not even notice.

The gist is that you give your reader some useful information. And then refer them to the product website. We’ll get into how to do it correctly in a minute. But before we do, you need to know why it’s so important. Here are a few benefits of preselling:

  • It builds trust – Once you have your readers’ trust, they will click your links more readily. And the more clicks you get the more sales you’ll make.
  • It takes your reader out of defense mode – Nobody likes to be sold something. By not doing that to them, your reader is less defensive. Unguarded reading means they’re not filtering what you say. So your content get absorbed.
  • It creates buying readiness – Now they’re open to hearing what you’re telling them. Being open means, they are open to everything you give them. For example, the sales message on the page you’re linking to. Sending them to the sales page in this state makes them more receptive to the actual pitch.
  • It increases your sales – Now your reader arrives at the sales page in a buying mood. Open to the sales message and feeling safe. The only possible result is more sales!
  • Your customers are happier – Your referral now feels like they decided to buy. Versus being pitched or convinced. And this leads to greater satisfaction with the product.
  • It boosts your profits – A satisfied customer doesn’t ask for a refund. Less refunds means more affiliate money stays in your pocket.

Obviously, it’s important to presell. You earn more commissions. And increase your customer satisfaction. Everybody wins!

OK, so how do you do it?

You’ve learned the importance of preselling. And hopefully you’re convinced you need to start doing it. You’re ready to learn how to do it properly. As I mentioned earlier, it’s both an art and a science.

The art of preselling

Effective preselling requires gaining your readers trust in order for them to let down their guard. This can only be accomplished by providing actual value in the information you’re presenting. But you can’t give them so much that they think they have everything they could need, and that’s what makes it an art. So you send them to the product website with a hunger for more of what the product provides. And since they’re more open, they are more likely to make a purchase.

Scientific preselling

You also have to include some very specific things.

The first is how you present the information. You’ve got to map out your strategy before you start writing. Your goal is to sell the product you’re promoting. You use the information to do this in one of two ways. First, you can provide useful but incomplete information. Or you can give them so much information that it feels overwhelming to do what you’re talking about. In either case, the product you’re referring them to solves the problem for them.

You also have to link to the product you’re promoting discretely. Instead, you use a direct link to the product website. When you do this, you’re click-throughs go way up. But, without your affiliate link, how do you get credit? There’s a trick to make this work… You use an image tag to cookie your reader before they leave your site.

Next, you want to make sure you’re linking on related words and phrases. Hyperlinked words are clicked more than anything else. Plus, if you link on relevant words, it only makes sense to click on there.

Using this system, you’re virtually guaranteed to increase your affiliate business success.


This process is not easy – at all! Let’s look at the skills required to pull it off: Great content. First of all, you actually have to write great articles and give value to your readers. Which means you need to be both knowledgable on the subject and capable of writing a high-quality article. Strategic writing. Yes, you must providing useful content. You also have to present the info in a way that provides real value. And still leave them wanting more. Or make the information so overwhelming they realize they can’t do it on their own.

Product selection. After that you have to figure out which products you want to promote. If you can manage to get the article written well. All your efforts are wasted if you send your reader to the wrong sales letter.

The technical know-how To be most effective you have to use the “covert cookie” method. This is pretty easy – you just make a 1 pixel X 1 pixel image with no border and make the “source” of the image your affiliate link. (But if you mess it up, your referrals won’t be tracked.)

Wrapping it up:
