How to Get the Maximum out of Facebook Comments Plugin
Guest Post By Brankica Underwood
Knowing that Facebook is number 1 in the world when it comes to visitors number, more and more bloggers are focusing on finding ways to present their blogs to Facebook users.
Almost every blog has a “Share this on Facebook” button, and on Facebook there are Networked blogs, where you can syndicate your blog and so much more.
I ran into this neat little plugin, used on this blog as well, called Facebook Comments for WordPress.
We are all aware that there are people reading our blogs who are not bloggers themselves. They won’t care about commenting when they need to enter their e-mail and have no idea what to put in as their website.
So they don’t comment. But knowing that Facebook has 520 millions of users (according to USAtoday), don’t you think that you are loosing a comment or two (and maybe a reader or two) because you are not making it easy for them?
Installing this plugin is as easy as installing any plugin. There’s just one extra thing to do, that’s to get a Facebook ID but the instructions are pretty clear and you won’t miss it.
After you have installed and activated the plugin, the fun starts.
Now you make it possible for everyone who has a Facebook account to comment on your post easy. If they are already logged in Facebook, all they need to do it type in the comment and press the button
.
Here is the nicest feature of this plugin. There is a check box that is automatically checked (and that we hope people won’t uncheck) called “Post comment to my Facebook profile”.
When someone comments on your post and presses the Post button, it will automatically post their comment to their Facebook wall and include a link back to your blog as well.
How can you maximize this to benefit you?
Let’s not talk about what visitors to your blog will do, because you can’t make anyone post the comment on their wall if they don’t want to do it.
There is something you can do that can bring you 2 benefits:
- get your blog better exposure on Facebook
- get more non-bloggers to comment on your blog using this plugin (meaning more links from Facebook)
Reply to every comment, make the reply worth reading and post it on Facebook.
Yes, I know there isn’t a cool looking reply option, but talk to the person you are replying to. If Maria left a comment using this plugin, start your reply with “Maria, …”.
Post the comment to your Facebook wall. You are getting the link and people can see that you actually communicate with your readers.
New visitors who are considering if they should comment will see that you communicate with the readers and they are more likely to comment on the post.
The most important thing is how you comment! Make your comment worth reading on Facebook. If you reply with “Thanks for the comment” and post it on Facebook, how do you think that will look on your wall?
No one will know what is it all about!
Make the comment interesting, answer the whole question so it is clear what the question was in the first place… just make the comment worth reading on Facebook. Make it useful for everyone!
Have one thing in mind: a person reading your comment posted on Facebook wall didn’t read the post, has no idea what it is about. So for you to drag them into coming to your blog and reading the post, you need to make a comment that will be a reply to the commentator and at the same time a sort of invitation to those who see it on Facebook.
If people see a comment like that on your wall (or their news feed) they are more likely to come and check out your post.
Do the same thing when you are commenting on other blogs. Write a nice comment and post it on Facebook. Not only you will be helping other bloggers but you will be building your reputation with the great comments you make.
Questions
- So how are you using Facebook Comments plugin on your or other blogs?
- Are you posting the comments to your Facebook wall?
- Are you making them worth reading?

Hi Brankica,

How do you know what I am thinking in my mind.
What a coincidence! I see my Facebook account today with the comment I post via your blog last time about Twitter followers. (Social Saturday #1), although it look not bad but somehow I think that I should improve it so my friends can also understand what I am talking about.
Thank you for the tips, I should add this plugin to my blog very soon.

Hello Rose,
I am so glad you liked it.
Now that you think about it and see the comment in front of you, you know exactly what I was talking about
If you are already commenting, why not helping a blogger by promoting the post better, right…
And if you are commenting on your own blog, replying to someone, you sure are gonna do your best to make it clickable.
Make sure to inform us all when you install the plugin so we can swarm you with comments

This is interesting! I see the Facebook comments in other places, but I never particularly liked them haha. When it comes to my personal Facebook profile, I use it completely for personal reasons, so I never comment with my FB profile. But I can see the benefit here. I don’t think I’ll install it anytime soon, but maybe I will at some point in the future. Great post, Brankica.
Thanks!

Lol, thanks Elise, but how about installing it and letting other comment on your post and share it on THEIR walls

But not to joke too much about a serious thing like Facebook, I understand what you are saying and it makes a lot sense.
Some people keep their blogging away from personal profile. I can only imagine if we shared on Facebook what we share on Twitter.
With all those links I think we would lose a friend or two
Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Hi Brankica,
Thanks for talking about this nifty little plugin and how to use it. So far I’ve only been using Facebook on a personal level and I’d like to start using it for business, but keep the two separate.
Thanks,
Peggy

Peggy, thanks for taking the time to comment.
You can keep it separate in the way that once you create a fan page, all the posts you write on the page are listed as page’s posts, not your own.
You can check out my page to see what I am talking about. You can’t see my profile posting there but the fan page.
The interesting thing is, if you have 10 admins on the page, all 10 will be posting as a page and not their personal profiles. So if you need any help feel free to contact me.

Nice to meet you at this site. I am assuming it is your first guest post. Wonderful, post it is well written, well formatted, and great free social media net work promotion. You made me feel how I am missing on a big chunk of Internet by not using it.
Keep on moving to a higher level.

Hi Brankica!
I tripped onto BenWan.net and saw you had a guest post here, so I had to say hello. I’m making the slow move from Blogger to WordPress, and while I can’t use plug-ins yet (free WP blog) I still take notes for the future! The power of Facebook for social media is less of a mystery thanks to you!

Hey Ben,
Nice to see a guest post by Brankica, she’s a lot easier on the eye than you are mate
You don’t know how often I’ve seen this on other blogs and had wondered about it. I’ve never really saw the benefits to it until I read your post. I can now see the opportunities I’m missing out on, as far as extra comments are concerned, by not having it installed.
I think I may have to just give this a little try.

Definitely worth a try, Sire. You can see my Facebook profile wall, has several comments posted and all of them linking to posts I commented on.
It can really get you some traffic, all that needs to be done is make a good comment
Thanks for commenting.

You can actually put them behind the comments. Although, they are ACTUAL comments, you know
At the moment, you can move them below comments manually but the author is developing the plugin more and plans to put the option to be automatic.

The facebook commenting plugin sounds like a brilliant idea, but that all depends on the person

I use facebook more for personal reasons, so spamming my wall with all my comments wouldn’t really be the best idea. So it really depends on how you use facebook.

What do you mean spamming your wall, you don’t write spammy comments
I think it is a great tool and as you say, it only depends on how you use Facebook. Also, there are a lot of people that will comments using it, just cause it is so easy.
Thanks for the comment Peter

Hey Brankica and Ben, I decided to leave a comment here too, so I can get the benefits of CommentLuv.

Do you think this plugin is slowing down the page load speeds? I noticed that Ana’s blog was taking a long time to load, but I this one still loads pretty quick. Let me know what you guys think.

Oh, Ileane, I can’t really believe you commented for the Luv, I see your comments all over the place and there is always something to learn from them
I think it is the other things that slow down the loading time. Usually by the time you scroll down this plugin already loaded.
I noticed that my pages load slow when there are a lot of comments, and Ana’s posts usually have a lot of them.
In general, I think it is the other stuff one the page that is “creating the problem”.
Try it out if you like it and see what you experience. I guess you can always deactivate it but then, it is a great way to get more comments and exposure
By the way, the comment you made in the plugin is one of the great examples on how to use it!

Hi Brankica,
Thanks for the post. I recently installed the Facebook comment plugin on both my blogs and find that I’m getting more comments. People are locating my blog from other friends walls so that’s what I have found to be really cool about this pulugin.
You really wrote about some key points so thanks for that reminder. I’m probably not using it entirely correct which is why I love to learn from others. Thanks so much for pointing this out to me.
Best to you,
Adrienne

Hey cool guest post, I did several tests with and without the plugin (which I have been using for sometime now) and it does load very slow, however it is still a cool plugin to have.
Facebook sends me a ton of traffic, it is now my number one source of traffic to be honest and thats thanks to the feeds I have pulled into my fb.
Facebook is certainly not something to turn your nose up at if you are marketing online, just so long as you capitilize on the traffic you get, know you numbers etc, it can certainly be an excellent free traffic source.

I installed this plug-in a couple weeks ago on both of my blogs and found it to be really helpful. I don’t think a lot of people are familiar with the benefits of it but you definitely pointed those out nicely for us. Thanks for that. Now when someone asks me, I’ll forward them to this post.

Hey Brankica,
I thought this insight of yours was HUGE in an understated kind of way . . .
“New visitors who are considering if they should comment will see that you communicate with the readers and they are more likely to comment on the post.”
With Facebook, it seems to me that reciprocity is huge – the whole, “I’ll comment on and like your posts if you comment and like mine. And I think this is even more significant on Facebook than on blogs.
With blogs, especially mega business focused ones like Copyblogger and such, I believe that people ‘get’ that there’s no way possible for the guru to continue to run their business and sit on every comment that comes in and engage.
But people in Facebook mode don’t play by those rules because by in large, those people are spending big hunks of their spare time there and they don’t seem to want to want to play with you if you don’t play with them.
So thank you for reminding me of this oh-so important lesson and for giving me one more nudge to finally get this plug-in installed.
