Over the past Month I’ve been really enjoying doing some Local Search Engine Optimisation for my local Perth clients. Build backlinks to your website using local keywords such as “city” + “business industry” as anchor text. Build links from relevant sources such as local forums, relevant industry blogs, high Page Rank websites, news sources and more. Diversify your link building strategy by using different keywords for your links; this helps your website rank well for many terms instead of over optimising for just one.

Factor #5: Geo Tagging within Local Area

The categorisation of your website is a smaller but vital factor of local search engine optimisation. List your business within its correct industry to ensure your website is well represented by what people would generally find you under. Open your business website up to allow people to check-in and geo tag you using online services such as Gowalla or Foursquare.

Many years ago, HTML was the only way that you could have a web site. You had to hire a web site designer if you wanted to have an appealing site online for your business. You had to pay good money if you wanted your site to look professional. The more things you wanted it to do, the more money you were likely to pay. Since WordPress came along though, things have changed drastically.

At first WordPress was just used to power blogs. Many people turned to blogging as a means of representing their business because it was easy to start a blog. You could have WordPress up and running with your own hosting and your own domain in a matter of minutes. People loved it. It wasn’t blogging that they loved as much as the easy-to-use content management system (CMS) though. Businesses and entrepreneurs that wanted their own site no longer had to dish out hundreds of dollars (or more) for a website designer because WordPress was free and it was something they could learn to use themselves!

One of the most common problems I hear about people who are doing some business online is the lack of action taking. I too have had to face this problem as well. See, I haven’t published a new blog post for quite a while and I’ve been pondering why. Here is what I observed and how I overcame my writer’s block.

At first, there was a sentence I kept repeating to myself, “writing is hard”. So I decided I’d rather concentrate on my strengths. While it is wise to focus on our strength and not our weakness, the other reality is also crucial: an online business is primarily made up of having fresh and original content and releasing them on a continual basis. So I noticed while I kept repeating to myself “writing is hard”, the result was: no new blog post was being written.

What you keep telling yourself (to your subconscious) is self-prophetic, if you tell your mind, “writing is hard”, your subconscious just “agrees” with you: “You’re right, so be it”. So, while it makes sense to focus on your strength and not on your weakness, it also makes sense to also aim, at the same time, to turn your weakness into your strength. So how do you go about doing that?

How I changed my thought pattern and turned my weakness into my strength

So how did I change my thinking and behaviour around and start to write again? It’s by stopping telling myself “writing is hard” and to tell my unconscious mind, “writing is easy”. The technique I’ve used to stop telling myself negative things is the NLP Swish techique for taking action.

According to Wikipedia: “The swish pattern is a process that is designed to disrupt a pattern of thought from one that used to lead to an unwanted behavior to one that leads to a desired behavior.”

While this post is not about explaining how to use the NLP Swish technique in detail, the key point I want to bring your attention here is to understand that you need to interrupt your negative thought pattern and replace it with a positive one. In short, just stop it, just stop arguing with yourself, it’s not even try about convincing yourself otherwise. Just stop your dis-empowering pattern of thinking.

When you stop telling yourself, “it’s hard”, and start telling your subconscious mind repeatedly “it’s easy”, your mind just stops arguing with you, “no, it’s not”. You’ll learn to make peace with your subconscious mind when you stop fighting (arguing with) it, then subconscious mind will start to work for you rather than stopping you from making progress.

Thinking isn’t the same as Taking Action

The second way I’ve learnt to beat the lack of action is through observing the behaviour of my children. Often I would ask them to do something, and after a while when I check on them, the action I told them to do is still not done. So, I began to observe them to see why they behave like that. What I observed in the children, I also noticed in myself. They think too much before they decide to act. I often just tell them, “stop thinking about it, thinking time is over, just do it, do it now.”

Now, let transfer this to the context of the writer’s block. Say, you need to write a new blog post, if you keep thinking about it (some people also call this paralysis by analysis), you’ll never write anything. Just tell yourself, “writing is easy”, then stop thinking about it, and just start writing. Just write as you would be talking to someone. Just sit down and start to write.

Guess what happens after you start writing? After a while, you find yourself writing some more and before you know it, you’ll have something to publish. So this is how, I’ve beaten my writing block.

How to Apply this technique to any situation?

Now the same is true for anything else, catch yourself about what you keep repeating to yourself about “making money online”, SEO, building backlinks, learning to use WordPress, learning what RSS is, etc . Are you telling yourself, “it’s too hard?” Just stop telling yourself this because that’s how you are going to experience your online business: hard.

Start telling yourself “it’s easy”, even if you believe otherwise, then take the necessary action to make it become easy for you. For example, pick up a user guide and start reading it. Keep building a few back link to your website each day, plan and organise your to do list. Whatever it is you need to have done, stop just thinking (arguing with yourself) about it, just start doing it.

Now just imagine if you were telling yourself repeatedly these instead, “taking action is easy”, “making money online is easy”, “WordPress is easy”, “my website always works for me”. Can you see what a difference that would make to how your experience your online business?

Action Taking Steps Summary

1. Catch, observe the sentences you tell yourself repeatedly.
2. Is it a negative sentence that dis-empowers you?
3. Stop thinking it, and replace the sentence with a positive and empowering one.
4. Then stop debating about the issue in your mind and just start taking actions… just start doing what you have to do now.
5. Picture yourself at the starting block, when you hear the start signal, it’s not then the time to think, just start to run.

The life of an Internet marketer/blogger newbie could be very lonely. Invariably they work alone, the people in their immediate circle don’t share their ‘nerdy’ enthusiasm and they often don’t even have someone as a ‘sounding board’.

Like most things in life results for the newbie Internet marketer don’t come immediately – on the contrary, if they achieve results, chances are it took a lot of trial and error, wasted money on empty promises of so called ‘gurus’, who sell ‘secrets to success’ that are only secret to the naive newbies.

But worse of all, it erodes the confidence of an already despairing aspiring Internet marketer whose low self-esteem is the only thing decreasing at the speed of light, and as if on steroids, the roots of self doubt are choking the last dwindling gasps of hope… Soon they are lost in the lush dense ‘forest’ of the ‘Internet’. Sure, the net provides an abundance of information, however, the inexperienced newbie has no way of knowing which bit is actually useful, relevant to the needs of their business or, whether it is really the latest in technology or if it is outdated.

Now most newbies are conscientious people who want to do things ‘properly’ and everything has to be ‘ready’ and ‘perfect’ because they want to do a ‘good job’. Getting stuck on details and fine tuning along the way inevitably takes the focus off, a resulting in that ‘lost in the forest’ feeling, they get overwhelmed, fall into despair and end up doing – nothing!!! This contributes to deeper isolation – physically, mentally and emotionally and from this pretty cage that they incarcerated themselves in, they try and save face in front of the “get a real job” union.

So, what is one to do?

You might ask yourself – what to do first? What order of sequence is most efficient?

Who do I believe/trust, what else is necessary to learn and/or buy?

Maybe (my wife/husband/friends are right) I should just get a real job, it certainly would be easier. The search for answers becomes more complex with every question… and this is where probably 90% of the people end up – giving up!!! It’s too hard…

Now, Churchill said – you never, never, never give up, but that’s another blog, a very long one. For those that are not ready to give up – what can they do?

Step One – you have to know your destination and you really have to want it!!!

It has to be clear to the point that you can smell it, feel the temperature and hear the noise of being there.

It has to be personal, it must have meaning to you and most importantly – you have to have a big enough –why. The stronger and more meaningful the reason – the more power you will find to get there.

What does it look like, what does it feel like, how will you know that you have reached your destination, what will you be doing when you get there, how will life be different for you, your family, your business, your friends?

What school are your kids going to now, where do you live, are you still driving the same car? What difference are you able to make to your community, children around the world, lost teenagers, and lonely seniors?

Are you wearing your Armani suit working on your business in the corporate world or did your success buy you the freedom to work in your track pants in the comfort of your home or in your bikinis sitting on the balcony of a resort in some exotic place whilst you are jet setting around the globe working on your business and mixing pleasure in your everyday life?

Once you have a crystal clear picture of it, write it down on a large piece of paper. Make a list in a point form on the left hand side.

Now you are starting to map your way out of that forest!

Step Two is – start writing all the sub-lists against each point describing to yourself what you need to do, to learn, unlearn, form association with, buy, change… in order for the first list to begin manifesting itself in your life. Start doing whatever needs to be done – immediately.

Whether we have our own business or not it is essential that we grow our leadership skills to enable ourselves to do the most productive thing at any given time in life and business and enjoy success sooner… hmm… yet another blog.

Step Three can extend into as many steps as necessary for your particular goal to happen because you will continue writing sub-lists until you reach the very point at where you are now.

You might find yourself out of your comfort zone paddling down “denial’ because you might not feel pleasant to be confronted with the truth of where you actually are. So now not only have you got a crystal clear vision of where you want to be – but it is also undeniably clear where you are at present, however you have a clear map you created to work back towards your ultimate goal.

Just like you would driving from A to B in a foreign place, follow your map! Stay disciplined and focused. With anything you pick up to do, ask yourself – by doing this now is it going to take me closer to my goal in the most efficient manner available to me at the moment? Am I doing the best thing at any given time? Do I really want it and is my ‘why’ unshakable?

If your answer is – yes – keep the champagne on ice – because you are on your journey which will take you to your ultimate goal, and then… just let the bubbly flow!

Congratulate yourself and reward yourself before mapping out further journeys.

One of the main advantages of WordPress is the ability to quickly publish a new web page or blog post and to edit the content of a web page after it’s been published. Now with WordPress it’s very easy to change your webpage URL as well after you’ve already published a page.

Beware, this is a change you must not do. Do not change your web page URL after it’s been published and the page has already been indexed by Google (i.e. found by and listed in Google). Google doesn’t like that.

The reason is: when you change your URL (slug), Google thinks there is a broken page (former URL), and a duplicate page on your site (new url): it may penalise both URLs (pages), and your page severely drops in ranking on Google: well at least for a while until Google decides drop the old page from its index.

So choose your URL very carefully before you publish a new page and never change it from then on.

However, if you do need to change a page URL, make sure the old page URL has a 301 redirect to the new page to avoid the above mentioned problem with Google. A 301 redirection means, you are telling Google that the old page has been permanently moved to a new location. So with a 301 redirection Google will drop the old URL in its list and index the new one.

A WordPress plugin that can help you not get penalised by Google is the WordPress Redirection plugin. This plugin will allow you to specify where the old URL has moved to.

Now if you change the permalink structure of your website: this literally means you’ve change the URL for your whole website, with the exception of your home page. Again to avoid the above penalty and avoid using Redirection plugin for your whole site, use the WordPress Advance Permalinks plugin for your website.

What’s the difference between the two groups? Is it that one group has more talent or intelligence than the other? No. I’ve observed that the struggling group is making one to three deadly mistakes that the successful group isn’t making. Those 3 mistakes are:

1. Not investing in the right source of information

2. Not investing in the right people

3. Not investing in the right technology

Of course there aren’t only three mistakes, but these are the most deadly and the ones that will stop you from moving forward with your online business. The good thing is, they are easy to correct. Mistakes are just experience. Once you recognise those mistakes and learn from them, you can put them behind you.

No matter what, don’t beat yourself up about mistakes, or time or money lost, that’s in the past and it’s all part of the journey to success

Biggest Mistake No. 1: Not investing in the right source of information

When you get started online, if you haven’t already, you’ll soon realize that the Internet is immense and everybody online is screaming, ”read me”, ”watch me”, ”listen to me”, ”go to my webinar”’, “open my email”, etc.

And because the information is “free” and you are somewhat interested or believe that maybe the information offered will be useful to you, you will subscribe, download, read, watch, or listen – afraid to miss that crucial bit of information that is going to change your world. But just one hour or one week later, you have to ask yourself “did that information change anything for me?”

My guess is, probably not. If that’s true for you then you have to stop and think about it – WHY , after spending all those hours of downloading, reading, watching and attending webinars, you still did not make any progress.

To accomplish anything online and keep making progress, you don’t need all the information that exists out there; you need the right information at the right time. You need it in the right order so you can actually implement them. The key words here are at the right time, in the right order and implementation. You know you can’t make progress if you can’t implement the information you get.

The number 1 mistake people make online is that they think the Internet is a source of free information – every single piece of information.

Is it really?

The Internet actually is a source of un-ordered, random and incomplete information. That’s why often you’ll find it very hard or next to impossible for you to implement what you think you know. That’s because on the Internet information is being directed at you at the wrong time and not necessarily in the right order. And if you are not careful with it, you’ll experience information overload and be totally paralyse by an excessive amount of information and ideas.

Also, you need to realise, there are a lot of information marketers online, and it’s their business to sell information. So even if they give you some free information, they will deliberately leave out key details that are only available if you buy their ”enhanced”, ”premium”, ”membership” information product, service, course or training. Even if you attend a free seminar at a fine hotel, you must ask yourself, who is paying the rent, the travel and refreshments. There is basically no free lunch in the world of internet marketing.

I hope you realise by now how dangerous it is to try to conduct an online business based only on the freely available information you find on the Internet. It’s like trying to bake a cake with the instruction in random order and missing ingredients while no one tells you what an egg is.

Now I’m not advocating you go and buy every and any information product out there, you still need to do your due diligence to find out what’s the right information for you, and if the information is presented to you in a logical and orderly way according to your preferred mode of learning.

It may not be widely known that often the same information that an Internet marketing guru is offering to you “…not at $1997 nor $997 but at the ridiculous low price of $297″, you could buy in a book for $15 or $20 on Amazon. Check for yourself the price of books I personally recommend on Amazon, just click on the Amazon books carousel on the right of this post. I like books for this main reason – the information is presented in an incremental and ordered manner.

So are you trying to conduct an online business on free information only?

You may have spent enough time on information-gathering and even have bought an information product or two and now you are wondering why you are still spinning your wheels.  This could be because you are committing deadly mistake number 2.

Biggest Mistake No. 2: Not investing in the right people

The 2nd deadly mistake I see new online business owners make is they are trying to do everything themselves – often through trying to learn to do everything themselves from free or information products they’ve bought. They think they will save themselves some money by not having to pay anyone.

If you haven’t, you’ll soon realise that there are a lot of elements involved in making a website successful.

Let me just name a few to start off.

1. You need to write the content of your website in a certain way so that your web page will rank well with the search engines (that’s call SEO),

2. then you need to get involved with the social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.

3. Then you need to get started with social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.

4. Then you need to create videos for YouTube, submit your website to web directories, write articles for article directories, make regular comments on other people’s blogs, build a community around yourself, be part of other communities, and build respect and friendships, write email autoresponder follow-up sequences, etc. The list is endless.

As you try each one of the above, soon you will realise that you enjoy doing some of them, be almost clueless on others and absolutely hate to do the rest. And it takes a lot of time to learn and master any and all of those skills.

What you think would save you $30 by doing it yourself, would actually take you weeks to first learn and then do. So, by trying to learn to do everything things by yourself you are just delaying your success.

So how do you overcome that?

Either outsource those difficult tasks to others

or

team up with people who have the skills you are lacking.

For synergy in business you need to find the right partners. If you are trying to do some online business you could fast track your success by teaming up with the right people.

You need to choose your partners wisely, I would say the most essential thing you need to consider when you are looking for a business partner is whether you share the same values. Your business partnership will not work if you don’t share the same values.

If you are just starting your online business make sure you find an experienced partner who can mentor you. Teaming up with only other equally inexperience newbie won’t benefit your team much. A mentor will have the experience to guide you to the right information and put it to you in the right order and help you with the implementation of your business plan.

Biggest mistake No 3:  Not investing in the right technology

The 3rd fatal mistake I see people make online is not investing in the right Internet technologies and software. I’ll be brief on this one.

A number of people try to conduct an online business solely on a free platform such as blogger blog, Facebook, Twitter alone and not invest in a website powered by WordPress. To do this is fraught with danger. When you use free platforms you don’t own any of it and you risk the danger of your business being shut down at any time, even if you do nothing wrong.

Now, those who know me know that my specialty is migrating websites from (static/HTML/free) sites to self hosted WordPress websites or creating completely new websites on the WordPress platform.

Why do I choose to go with WordPress? Because I know WordPress is a very powerful platform. I believe that to be successful online you need to be using the WordPress platform. I’ve looked at the on-line market, the trends, the tools, the people who are successful and this is my bottom-line advice:

If you aren’t using WordPress yet, you are not positioning yourself for the best results.

The main search engines value WordPress websites above other sites, and it is easy for you the site owner to make amendments, blog, add plug-ins and generally keep abreast of new technology, this is just impossible to implement if you use plain html.
