Traffic at nightIt’s undeniable that the one thing you need to succeed in your online business is traffic. And nothing beats free traffic. So where do we get free traffic? Google and other search engines.

How do we get free traffic from Google?

You’ve experienced this process a lot of times. You visit your favorite search engine. Enter in a word or phrase you want to research. And then you visit one or more of the sites that show up. That website owner has just enjoyed the benefit of free traffic. We will be discussing here how to get website traffic to you for free.

If you’re like most people you only click links on the first page or two. The truth is that this first page of results receives nearly all the clicks. And believe it or not, the first 3 results receive over 70% of the traffic.

This means that to get any real traffic you need to be on the first page in Google. And this means Google needs to “rank” you as a top 10 result. And this bring us to…

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is a measure of how well Google and other search engines think your website matches the search terms people are typing into their search boxes. The formula Google uses to determine this is known only by Google. But there are several things that we know for sure.

Getting indexed

Before your website can begin gaining ranking, you have to alert Google to it’s existence. This is known as being “indexed.” What this means is that Google visits your site and records information about it in their database.

In order to get indexed, Google has to be able to find you. Getting a link from another site will accomplish this easily. Google will actually follow the links on sites it already has indexed to find new sites and index them.

Use your Twitter and Facebook updates to get quick indexed links to your site. Google visits these sites many times every day. And follows new links it finds immediately.

Gaining ranking

Once you have been indexed, you will start working on increasing your rank. Just getting indexed does you almost no good, considering that Google has billions of pages in their database.

There are three components of gaining ranking:

  • Content
  • Links
  • Activity

Content strategies

This is the SEO you do on your site itself. And it means that the content on your page matches the keywords you’re targeting. Clearly this article is about search engine optimization. One reason Google knows this is because the words search engine optimization appear inside it. Another reason is because there are related words, like website traffic, too.

You also need to make sure the title tags, outbound links and the domain itself match the topic of the page. These all play a part in helping Google determine what your website is about.

Your links

The next thing to consider is your links. This includes both the inbound and outbound links. You want to make sure you have more inbound links than outbound links. The more inbound links you have the better your ranking will be.

A very easy way to get a lot of links to your site is through article marketing. With this strategy what you do is write an article about the topic you’re targeting. Then you have to create multiple versions of this articles. Because you’re going to post a unique copy of it to lots of different websites. And the more you do the better.

Make your site active

Finally, we know that Google gives you credit for the activity on your site. A page that was created 3 years ago and hasn’t been touched since won’t rank well. Google expects you to be updating your site regularly. RSS feeds are an easy way to keep your content changing.

But the best way is with active discussions on your page itself. To get comments from others, you need to get others to visit your site. One simple method for doing this is to use forums.

Set up forum profiles with the ones related to your website. Visit often and make posts. Always include a link back to your site. This gets you inbound links. And it gets people to visit the site you link to.

Conclusion

It’s important that you do everything listed here. Unfortunately, rewriting your articles again and again. Creating profiles on a ton of forums. And posting your articles and comments takes a lot of time. Which means you probably won’t end up doing it.

The good news is that there are automated software programs out there that will do this for you. So my best advice is to automate as much of this as you can. This way you’ll actually do it. By taking these steps you practically ensure you’ll get free traffic from Google.
