A mentor can show you where you’re heading. A mentor is a person that has achieved what you want to achieve, and who is also willing to give you advice and help you in your endeavour. You can pick your mentor’s brain to find out what steps he or she took to get to the point where you want to be.

Your mentor might suggest certain educational or occupational steps for you to take, while some mentors also take the time to introduce their protégés to the right kind of people conducive to the ultimate goal.

If you are able to find a mentor who is willing to assist you then pay attention; this person has already taken the necessary steps to get where you want to eventually be and can a great resource for you when you are trying to figure out what you need to do to get there.

A mentor can keep you accountable. It is all too easy to set a bunch of goals with the noblest of intentions and then grow tired of all the effort involved with reaching your final goal. If you have a mentor who knows how far you have come to get where you are, they will not let you simply slip right back to your old self.

A true mentor – one who cares about you and your life – will be the kind of person who will question you when you need questioning, challenge you when you need challenging, and assist you when you need assisting.

If you have someone in your life that you check in with regularly, you might think twice before doing things that are not conducive to your new lifestyle and goals. If you have sworn off toxic relationships, for example, your mentor might ask you about the dates you have been going on. If your crutch used to be overeating, a mentor might be the one to ask you about how your current diet is going.

Stay honest with your mentor, because their ultimate goal is to see you succeed. If you find a mentor who is willing to look out for you, you should consider yourself fortunate.
