Social BookmarkingIf you’ve got a website, you would care about getting traffic to your website. There are many ways to get people to visit your website. One way I am going to show you right now is through the Social Bookmarking websites.  So what is Social Bookmarking?

Social bookmarking is very similar to adding websites or web pages to your Favourites (in Internet Explorer) or Bookmarks (in Firefox) so you can come back to them later. Social Bookmarking is doing the same publicly. Social bookmarking is like sharing your Favourites websites to your friends or the whole world.

You do that through Social Bookmarking websites like Digg.com, reddit.com, stumbleupon.com etc (below you’ll find a list of those websites). You get started with Social Bookmarking by first signing up with one of those websites and then start adding websites you like to your account.  I would suggest you start with Digg.com

Now what is the social aspect of those Social Bookmarking websites? They are similar to the Social Media websites (Facebook, Twitter are example of Social Media websites), you can find and add friends to your Social Bookmarking account, just like with Facebook.

Social Bookmarking is excellent for bringing traffic to your website because it helps to multiply backlinks to your website and the more people bookmark your pages, and comment about them, the more traffic you are going to get.

Now, there is an Unwritten Rule with social bookmarking. You don’t bookmark your own web pages, although this is not forbidden, it’s considered spamming when you bookmark your own web pages. It’s better to let others bookmark your web pages.

So to benefit from Social Bookmarking, what you need to do is to start with a group of your friends. Ask them to sign up with one or more of the Social Bookmarking websites and ask them to bookmark pages on your website which they like. Then you grow your group of friends virally by asking your friends to refer their friends to your website. And remember to bookmark your friends web pages too.

Here are some actions you can do this week:

  1. Start by signing up with digg.com, this is the most popular social bookmarking site. The link below will take you to digg sign up page:

  2. After you’ve sign up, put up your picture on your profile
  3. Write something interesting about yourself in your “About Me” profile.
  4. Then start adding friends to your new Digg account.

You are now ready to start bookmarking web pages you like.

How to Bookmark a web page?

You can experiment with bookmarking a web page right now. Look at the bottom of this blog post for “Share the Knowledge” icons, locate the digg icon, if you hover over the icons a tips will show up telling you what the icon is, and then click on the digg icon. Just follow the steps that digg leads you to.
